1. Theoretical Exam: This is a written test consisting of 30 multiple-choice questions covering traffic laws, road signs, and safety rules. A maximum of three errors is allowed to pass.
2. Practical Driving Test: After passing the theory exam, learners must take driving lessons through an authorized driving school and then pass a practical driving test with a DGT examiner.
3. Medical Examination: All applicants must pass a psychophysical health check (reconocimiento médico) to ensure they are fit to drive. This includes vision, hearing, reflexes, and mental health assessments.
4. Provisional Licence: Once the practical test is passed, a provisional licence is issued, valid until the official plastic card arrives.

EU and Non-EU Licence Holders

If you’re from another EU country, your licence is valid in Spain without the need for conversion. However, after two years of residence, it’s advisable to register your licence with the Spanish traffic authorities. For non-EU citizens, such as Americans, Canadians, or Australians, a foreign licence is typically valid for only 6 months. After that, it must be exchanged (if there’s a treaty between Spain and your country) or a new licence must be obtained by passing the Spanish driving exams.
